The "morning prayer to start the day today" trend is one of those TikTok corners I approach with a specific kind of care, because the people in those videos are sincere and their mornings are real to them and I am a guest in that space even when the content is aimed at believers and I am not one. I've been watching the trend and posting my own take on @vixenraefr, and the response has been one of the more interesting things to happen in my comments section in a while: believers and non-believers both saying they found something in it, which tells me this territory is worth exploring properly.
So here's the honest version. My morning, on the days when I actually have one (given the insomniac scheduling, that's a loose term) looks nothing like the prayer content. I want to walk through what it actually looks like, because I think there's something real in the secular version of a morning ritual, even if "ritual" is the only word both versions share.
what my mornings actually look like (a confession)
I am not a morning person. This is important context. I am a nighttime person who has made peace with the fact that she will sometimes still be awake when the morning people are already on their second cup of coffee and their gratitude journaling. My natural schedule, left entirely to itself, would have me working from approximately 10pm to 3am and sleeping from 4am to noon. The city has different ideas. Biscuit, the neighbor's dog I dog-sit sometimes, has VERY different ideas, specifically around 7am.
On a typical morning here's the sequence: alarm, which I hit snooze on twice and then surrender to, because the third snooze only makes me feel worse. Cold feet on a wood floor. The journey to the kitchen, which takes twelve steps and still somehow feels far when I'm half asleep. Coffee. The process of making it is, in fact, one of the closest things I have to a ritual. I grind the beans. I don't use a pod machine. The grinding and the smell are part of it and something in my brain gets the message that the day is beginning.
Then I stand at the window with the cup, the first few sips while it's still hot enough to matter, and I look at whatever the city is doing. There's a building across the way where the second-floor light is almost always on at whatever hour I'm up, and I have spent probably more hours than is normal wondering what's happening in there. A night-owl like me, probably. We have a silent solidarity going.
Lazarus is on the windowsill. He's doing his smug healthy-pothos thing, converting whatever light he can get into continued existence. We coexist.
gratitude without an address
Here's the thing about prayer, and the thing the morning prayer content gets right even from the outside: there's something real happening in those rituals. Not something supernatural, that's not what I'm saying, but something psychological and structural that serves a genuine function. Starting the day by naming what matters to you. Orienting toward something larger than the to-do list. Taking five minutes to feel the texture of your life before the day collapses it into tasks. That's not nothing. That's the opposite of nothing.
What I do instead of prayer is not nothing either. It's just addressless. I feel gratitude and the gratitude doesn't go anywhere. I'm grateful for the coffee and the window and the city light across the way and the fact that I slept at all and the fact that I have work to do that I care about. I feel that. I just don't direct it toward a recipient.
A lot of people find this unsatisfying, the gratitude-without-a-deity thing. I've had conversations in my DMs with people who say it feels like sending a letter with no address, that it doesn't land anywhere. And I understand that. There was a time when that would have been my objection too, when the structure of prayer felt necessary for the feeling to be real.
What I've found is that the feeling is real regardless of the address. Gratitude is a neurological event that has effects whether or not there's a receiver. I'm grateful for exactly the same things I'd be grateful TO God for, if I still believed in God. The gratitude is the same. The address is what changed. And the addressless version turns out to be enough, more than enough actually, because it comes without the freight of obligation, the guilt when I skip it, the performance of piety. It's just me in the morning, genuinely glad to be awake, being glad privately.

I want to spend a minute being fair to the trend rather than just contrasting myself from it, because being fair is important here and the people watching from inside that tradition deserve honesty rather than dismissal.
The morning prayer content, at its best, is doing something structurally identical to any good morning routine: it's creating a transition ritual. A buffer between sleep and the chaos of the day. A moment of intentionality before the world demands reaction. Whether the content is "here's my morning prayer" or "here's my five-minute journaling practice" or "here's how I do my coffee ritual," the function is the same. You are building a little structure at the edge of the day that tells your nervous system: we're choosing how this goes. Not being thrown into it. Choosing.
For people whose lives are organized around faith, prayer is the ultimate version of that ritual, a direct line to the organizing principle of their worldview. That's not nothing. That's the opposite of nothing. I'm not gonna mock the mechanism because I'm not using it anymore. It served a real function and people who are still in it deserve the same honesty I give to everything else: the ritual works, the structure is real, and the decision about what that structure is built on is yours to make.
the secular morning ritual I've actually built
So here's what I've assembled, for anyone who's curious about the atheist morning infrastructure:
Coffee, made slowly. The tactile ritual of it, grinding, pouring, waiting, does something that instant doesn't. I've tried shortcuts on this and they all feel like skipping a step that matters. The slowness is the point.
The window. Just standing at it. Not with my phone, not with anything to read. Just five or ten minutes of looking at the world going past and being a body that's awake in it. This has replaced the mindless phone scroll that used to be the first thing I did, and the replacement is not nothing. The scroll was outsourcing my mood to whatever the algorithm served up first. The window is just me, taking a reading on my own internal weather before the noise comes in.
The notebook, first entry before I look at anything else. Not a journaling practice with a system, just whatever is in my head. Sometimes it's two sentences about how tired I am. Sometimes it's a lyric fragment. Sometimes it's the dream I was having, transcribed quickly before it evaporates. Sometimes it's something I'm grateful for and I write it plainly: I'm glad I'm alive today. I'm glad the record is coming together. I'm glad the coffee is hot this morning because I didn't forget it for once. Nobody gets that note except the notebook. that's fine.
The whole sequence takes maybe twenty minutes on a good day. On a bad day, which is any day Biscuit needs to go out immediately, or I overslept and have a call, or the insomnia was bad enough that twenty minutes is what I'm running on, it collapses to just the coffee at the window. Even that is something.
what I've stopped outsourcing
The line I keep coming back to, the one I'm working through in the record and in these posts, is about what happens when you stop outsourcing the interior life. Prayer, at its core, is a form of outsourcing: you hand the worry, the gratitude, the need for guidance, to something larger than yourself. And I understand why that feels like relief. I remember why it felt like relief. There's a weight to carrying your own sense-making apparatus and not having somewhere to put it down.
What I found when I stopped is that I could hold more of it than I thought. Not all of it, nobody holds all of it. But more. And the things I used to hand off, the gratitude especially, the noticing of what's good, didn't disappear when the address did. They just became mine. Entirely mine. Which is heavier and also more true, and I wouldn't trade that back even on the mornings when it's hard.
The coffee is cooling. Lazarus is thriving. The building across the way has its light on. There's a song that needs work in the studio and the day is doing what the day does, organizing itself into hours that belong to me if I choose to claim them.
I'm grateful. The gratitude goes nowhere and lands everywhere. That's enough. That's the whole ritual. See you tomorrow morning, coffee in hand, thanking the window.
